175th Anniversary of The Penny Black

Today is the anniversary of the Penny Black, and the image shown here is the Google graphic for those who are Googling via www.google.co.uk. It was issued on the first of May 1840 and was the first postal adhesive stamp from 6th May that year. The postal service was a concept designed by Sir Rowland Hill.

J is for Jersey

This was produced by Jersey Post to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of the Island of Jersey from German Occupation. I love the quote from Winston Churchill “….And our Dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today”.

We visited Jersey in 2011 and you can read the various posts about Jersey under this tag line and I wrote four posts about the War Tunnels – Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4

G is for Goucher

Several years ago I was sent this lovely First Day Cover for the Goucher Victory Ship. From limited research it would appear that these ships, were named after Colleges in the US and were used in the main for returning American troops back to the United States at the end of the Second World War.

E is for Elstead Mill

Elstead2

This lovely building, once a mill still stands, and is now a rather lovely and authentic public house in the rural Surrey village of Elstead.

I have an ancestor, Sarah Ellis (nee Hall), born in London who moved to Elstead and is recorded on the 1851 Census as a lace worker. Sarah and her husband John migrated from Elstead to Geelong Victoria Australia as free settlers.

Last September, I attended the funeral of my late Mum’s first Cousin. His son held the wake (family gathering) at Elstead Mill public house and was completely unaware of the family connection. I discreetly took a few pictures.

A is for Arran

From the personal collection of Julie Goucher

One of my favourite subject matters on postcards is that of maps. This card is a particular favourite!
The Isle of Arran is situated in the Firth of Clyde between the Mull of Kintyre and Ayrshire. Kintyre is the small patch situated at the top left corner.
